Module 6: Operational Law

The aim of module 6 is to examine legal frameworks relevant for planning and conducting military operations.

The main topics of this module are the functioning of international law, the legal framework of the use of force, principles of the law of armed conflict and human rights law, direct participation in hostilities, prohibited/restricted use of weapons and methods of warfare, the legal framework of naval and air operations, enforcement of international criminal law, and rules of engagement.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this module, students should be able to:

  1. Explain the rules of international law related to the use of armed force
  2. Explain the concept of command responsibility and enforcement of international criminal law.
  3. Analyse the application of principles of law of armed conflict and human rights law in a joint operational environment.
  4. Identify and employ rules of engagement for a joint military operation
